Before leaving for Tahiti and the Marquesas
Islands where he stayed till his death on the 8th of May in 1903, Paul
Gauguin stayed several times in Pont-Aven (between 1886 and 1894). The
museum celebrates this centenary by exposing the most renowned international
works from Gauguin, Bernard, Sérusier, Denis, Filiger, Verkade,
de Haan, Maufra, Moret, Seguin, Jourdan, Delavallée, de Chamaillard,
Slewinski, O’Conor, Ballin…
The name of “Pont-Aven art school” was given to these 20 painters
because of their unity of expression.
The exposition contains 51 works of which 6 from the hand of the master
and numerous not exposed uptill now in Brittany.

Exposition « Gauguin’s cross »
Pont-Aven – from the 15th of June to the 15th of September
Religion
playing an important part in Gauguin’s life and work, about ten
of his works are dedicated to the life and death of the Christ. The parishes
of Nizon and Pont-Aven organize an exposition of reproductions of these
religious paintings in the Tremalo chapel.
Furthermore, a few minutes walk will take you to the bucolic setting of
this lovely chapel.

By tasting the delicious « Galettes de Pont-Aven » (buttercakes of Pont-Aven), you will be taken back in to time and discover the ancient taste which nurtured the creativity of the artists. For the centenary of Gauguin’s death, the butttercake factory has designed a “flavour bag”, a pagemarker and a new packaging as a tribute to the most famous painters of the “Pont-Aven art school”.

Discovery tour « Following Gauguin’s footsteps in Pont-Aven”
Pont-Aven – from May to September 2003
It is
in Pont-Aven that Paul Gauguin finally finds what he had been looking
for all this time.
The Pont-Aven tourist office has set up a discovery tour allowing the
visitor to follow Gauguin’s footsteps in- and around the village.
20 sites painted by the artist have been selected. The visitor can compare
the original site with a reproduction on the site painted by Gauguin.
The tour’s set up permits free visits, but guided visits are also
possible. A 40 pages brochure showing the paintings together with the
sites is available at the tourist office.

The centenary event will be inaugurated in all
the art galleries of the village Pont-Aven on the 7th of June, birthdate
of Paul Gauguin. All galleries serve cocktails to celebrate this date.
At the beginning of the evening, a conference on “the impact of
Gauguin on contemporary design”.
